The Basics About Boring Tools

A boring tool is used for metal cutting on the inside diameter of drilled components, and is used to enlarge a hole that has already been drilled. Boring tools are manufactured on precision machines and they are used in instances where there is a need to accomplish high levels of accuracy of the diameter of a hole.

Boring is one of the main lathe operations, in addition to drilling and turning. The process of boring can be carried out on several machine tools, namely Engine lathes, Vertical lathes, other lathes, Chuckers, machining centres or milling machines, and on specialized boring machines or mills.

A single-point cutting tool is used is used for boring in a lathe, whereby a work piece is held in the chuck and then rotated. During this process, a boring bar with an insert attached to the bar’s tip, a boring head, is fed into an existing hole to create a cylindrical surface on a work piece. Boring applications can be used to create a wide range of simple and complex geometries, in several diameters. The two main categories of geometry which lathe boring can create are tapered holes or straight holes.

High quality tungsten carbide tips are brazed on boring tools and the cutting edges are ground on the tips.

TecTools supplies a wide variety of boring tools:

  • Lathe Tool / Boring Tool Styles [ISO 8, DIN 4973] which are custom-made to specific needs, and are available in C2, C5, C6, ISO P20, P30, K10, K20 grades. These boring tools are mainly used for through boring operations on components.
  • Carbide Tool / Boring Tools Style [ISO 9, DIN 4974], which are also referred to as carbide cutting tools or lathe tools. Our company can supply customized carbide boring tools to meet any specifications. These tools are available in C2, C5, C6, ISO P20, P30, K10, K20 grades. These tools are primarily used for boring operations where a square stepped shoulder is required in the bore.
  • Boring Bits / Boring Tools (45°), also referred to as lathe tools, are carbide cutting tools used as metal cutting tools in machine shops for a wide range of materials. Tectools supplies customized boring tools to specified requirements. The tools are available in C2, C5, C6, ISO P20, P30, K10 and K20 grades, and in right and left hand versions. Boring tools are primarily used for fine boring operations.
  • Cylinder Boring Tools / Boring Tools (60°), which are carbide cutting tools and are also referred to as lathe tools or in-line boring tools. The Cylinder Boring Tools are available in C2, C5, C6, ISO P20, P30, K10 and K20 grades, and in right and left hand versions. These tools are mostly used for fine boring operations.
